The thing I miss in a lot of painted art are figures interacting with each other, their touch creating indentations, as in the works of Bernini. I really like the one Kent Williams piece below that focuses on two figures joined by a grasp. I also seem to post a lot of single figure works which have a tinge of loneliness about them. But then Bernini’s figures are illustrating a rape and that’s the worst argument for getting two characters together.
Bernini never ceases to amaze me.
The way he can make cold, hard marble look as warm and soft as real flesh is truly a gift. His attention to detail is astounding. You can see the veins beneath Pluto’s skin in his hand, especially brought out by the way Bernini plays with shadows and counts on them to make his statues real. I still can’t fathom how anyone can take a slab of rock and make it come to life. The way the cloth folds and how it almost seems translucent, how you just know how the fabric will feel without even touching it.
The day I see his statues in person is the day I will cry hysterically in public.
